Lawmakers in states such as Mississippi and Iowa are seeking to improve the quality of incoming teachers by offering incentives, such as full scholarships for top students, while encouraging colleges to raise admissions standards for their education programs. Critics warn that such changes could reduce the ranks of education majors and make the teaching force less diverse, while others support the efforts. "The bottom line is we need to make the teaching profession more prestigious," said David Rock, dean of the School of Education at the University of Mississippi.
