A study published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine found that in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing initial radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy, a drop of at least 45% in the maximum standardized uptake value on FLT-PET/CT scans and a decrease of at least 31% in gross tumor volume measured using visual delineation were linked with a three-year disease-free survival rate of 88%. Three-year disease-free survival was 63% for other patients. Scans undertaken in the second week of therapy were the most useful in customizing treatment, researchers said.
