Bonnie Harvey and Michael Houlihan started their wine business in the 1980s and despite their lack of expertise, they were able to successfully grow the brand before selling it in 2005. Along the way, they worked their way out of debt and raised awareness for their business, called Barefoot Wine, by donating to nonprofit groups instead of relying on paid advertising. "We would go into neighborhoods to find worthy causes to donate to, so that they would remember us and come buy our wine," Harvey said. "It took us 20 years, so it was our 'get rich slow' scheme."
