The number of prescription drugs paid for by a Medicaid managed care plan instead of a fee-for-service plan more than doubled from September 2011 to June 2012, according to an IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics study. Medicaid managed care plans handled 4.9 million prescriptions monthly in 2011, compared with 12.5 million in 2012. The study, which covered four states and three therapeutic classes, found an increase in generic drug utilization and regional discrepancies in prescribing practices.
