Tragedies might affect your employees in unexpected ways, so it's important to be sympathetic to their needs, Suzanne Lucas writes. "[I]f your normally hard working, trustworthy employee says she just can't concentrate because of some tragic event that didn't affect you at all, assume she's telling the truth," Lucas writes. Show compassion for your employees as they deal with crises, and make sure you are following the Family Medical Leave Act and other relevant laws, she recommends.
