An explosion last week at West Fertilizer in West, Texas, killed 14 people and injured about 200. The company had at one time been cited for having no written maintenance plan, but had remedied the omission, according to NBC News. The explosion caused concern in Louisiana, where several fertilizer plants operate. "We certainly can’t eliminate all risk in this business," said Morris Johnson, production manager for CF Industries in Donaldsonville, La. "[W]hat we can do is minimize the risk, particularly in what it relates to the ongoing reliability of equipment, and we do that through extensive inspection, mechanical integrity tests ... and also in terms of the training that we give our operators."
