In January, many former prison inmates who lack health insurance will gain coverage through the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. States that agree to the expansion will extend Medicaid eligibility to nonelderly low-income adults, which will include millions of ex-offenders on parole or probation. "We now have a golden opportunity to develop and implement quality interventions to both improve health outcomes for this population and also reduce the rate of criminal activity," George Mason University criminologist Faye Taxman said.
