An analysis found that 30-day mortality rates for Medicare beneficiaries admitted to critical access hospitals rose by 0.1% annually between 2002 and 2010, while rates for other hospitals declined. "Given the substantial challenges that CAHs face, new policy initiatives may be needed to help these hospitals provide care for U.S. residents living in rural areas," researchers wrote. The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
