Microsoft's Windows 8 tablets have grabbed a 7.4% share of the worldwide market just months after the debut of the OS, according to a first-quarter report from the Strategy Analytics research firm, which found shipments for branded tablets as a whole more than doubled from a year ago. Apple retained its lead, but the iPad maker's share shrunk from 63% to 48% while Android rose from 34% to 43% as its shipments almost tripled.
