Fifth-graders at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Elementary School were asked to choose an event or person in history and develop interactive research projects to present to other students in a science fair-like setting. Teacher Laura Schut said students were able to take ownership of their learning with the projects, topics of which included the Wright Brothers' first flight and the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. "Overall, they retain the information better and really connect to these events and people," Schut said.
