Nanowires' extreme thinness -- smaller than the wavelength of light emanating from the sun -- can concentrate the sun's rays in such a way as to cause resonances, boosting the amount of power solar voltaic cells can capture by 15-fold, according to research by scientists at the Nano-Science Center in Denmark. The wires also hold potential for quantum computers but will require years of research before they can be put to use, said Peter Krogstrup, a researcher at the Niels Bohr Institute.
