President Barack Obama's proposed budget restores research funding cut under sequestration and adds funding for translational research, but it does so to the potential detriment of basic research, some scientists warn. The budget would boost overall NIH funding by 1.5% over 2012 levels. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences would get a 16% boost, with the Cures Acceleration Network receiving $40 million. However, critics point out that the proportion of NIH funds spent on basic research has fallen from two-thirds to half.
