Oregon approved establishing pilot projects to assess the effects of dental therapists, but the Legislature did not provide funding or any guarantee of licensing. Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry declined to set up a training program for dental therapists, so now the president of the Northwest Health Foundation is looking for ways to get midlevel providers trained. Nichole Maher, the foundation's president, is approaching colleges that already train dental hygienists, but they might not want to invest in the additional equipment needed to train dental therapists.
