A federal court ruling on pricing of standard-essential patents licensed on "reasonable and nondiscriminatory" terms should help stem high royalty payouts and reflects the principles that come into play on what is good for an entire market and the "social good," according to Jorge L. Contreras, an associate professor of law at American University. He noted the ruling "makes the big picture [regarding patent value] a lot clearer."
