Near-death experiences can often stay with someone longer and with more detail than real memories, according to a study published in the journal PLoS ONE. About 5% of the general population say they have had a near-death experience and describe similar feelings: passing through a tunnel, seeing dead loved ones or seeing glowing light. "It's really something that stays in the mind of people as a clear trace, and it's even more clear than a real memory," said Vanessa Charland-Verville, a neuropsychologist who led the study.
