Recent research indicates that infants and toddlers who develop plagiocephaly, or flat head syndrome, also suffer deficits in walking, fine motor skills and cognitive skills that can persist through age 3. Plagiocephaly helmets are used to treat the condition by reshaping the head. Experts believe that putting babies to sleep on their backs contributes to the condition, but say it is still the safest position.
