A study in Science Translational Medicine found that a portable, magnetic resonance-based diagnostic tool can identify fungal bloodstream infections involving five Candida species in less than three hours. Researchers documented 98% positive agreement and 100% negative agreement between the device and diagnoses based on blood cultures. "This study shows that the nanoparticle- and T2MR-based detection method is rapid and amenable to automation and offers clinicians the opportunity to detect and identify multiple human pathogens within hours of sample collection," researchers wrote.
