A recent paper from the Education Commission of the States highlights civics programs that use controversial or newsworthy subjects with which students can personally identify to boost civic engagement and build skills such as being able to argue both sides of an issue, education reporter Catherine Gewertz writes in this blog post. Among the programs receiving recognition as examples of good civics education were the Colorado Youth Advisory Council and KidsVoting USA.
