Sixth-graders at Ortiz Middle School in Santa Fe, N.M., learned about energy conservation through hands-on projects in science and home-economics classes. Through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, government agencies and a community college, students participated in projects to compare incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs and to design a superhero conservation mascot costume using recycled materials, such as solar panels, that reflected an energy-conservation theme.
