Design constraints, timing and other issues have derailed plans to revolutionize standardized testing under the Common Core State Standards, according to a recent report. While Education Secretary Arne Duncan predicted in 2010 that the exams would be a "game-changer," the Gordon Commission on the Future of Assessment in Education finds that the tests will not be much different from those now in place, education reporter Valerie Strauss writes in this blog post. "The progress made by the PARCC and Smarter Balanced consortia in assessment development, while significant, will be far from what is ultimately needed for either accountability or classroom instructional improvement purposes," the report states.
