Business-school students and young graduates are getting involved in philanthropic activities once reserved for executives who had already climbed the ladder. Philanthropy can involve giving time, knowledge and expertise to good causes, not just money. "Students are saying, 'I want to be a captain of industry, but I don't want to be out there just chasing materialistic objects. I need something deeper,' " says Wharton marketing professor Americus Reed.
