San Francisco's new Transbay Transit Center will have a perforated aluminum skin instead of a fritted glass facade to make it safer in the event of a terrorist attack -- and to save about $10 million in project costs. The altered outer design is still expected to improve energy efficiency and give the effect of being transparent. The center of the 1.5 million-square-foot facility will feature a structural steel frame with an "undulating transparent" wall. A 5.4-acre urban park will top the hub and have wetlands, along with graywater- and rainwater-collection systems.
