Tighter rules on hydrocodone prescribing are needed to fight the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in Central New York, said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., at a news conference Monday in Syracuse. The abuse of opioids and hydrocodone is becoming worse throughout the area, Schumer said. Hydrocodone would be classified as a schedule II drug and be subjected to new federal restrictions under Schumer's Safe Prescribing Act of 2013.
