Researchers are baffled over the ocellated icefish, which lacks scales and has clear blood, and is found only in the deep waters of Antarctica. All other animals with bones have blood that appears red when exposed to oxygen. Scientists speculate the fish's enlarged heart pumps blood through the body with plasma instead of hemoglobin, but say that more studies are needed.
