Shaun Longstreet, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Marquette University, write in this commentary. Advisers often are judged by where their graduate students end up and may misunderstand alternative career choices. "By providing a rationale and a direction, graduates will help advisers see beyond the silo of the tenure track," Bethman and Longstreet write.
