Researchers infused monkeys with a Parkinson's-like disease with mesenchymal stem cells that were treated with growth factors to promote development into A9 dopaminergic neurons, which become damaged in patients who have Parkinson's disease. PET scans showed monkeys treated with the cells demonstrated increased dopamine transporter expression, according to the study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Researchers hope to be able to begin developing the method for use in human patients.
