Early data from ongoing studies show bedside ultrasound imaging to confirm central venous catheter placement could replace the gold-standard chest X-ray, researchers reported at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine annual convention. Dr. Eric Mervis of the University of California, Irvine, who led one study, said bedside ultrasound takes less time, does not expose patients to radiation and detects a pneumothorax with up to 95% sensitivity.
