Premature infants in the NICU setting fare better when their parents are significantly involved in their day-to-day care, according to preliminary results of a small pilot study at Toronto's Mt. Sinai Hospital. Babies whose parents committed to spending at least eight hours a day at the hospital gained more weight, were more likely to be breast-fed at the time of discharge and seemed to recover more quickly from painful procedures, researchers report in the journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth. Sixteen other hospitals across Canada are conducting similar trials.
