Past research has shown mixed results on the relationship between calcium intake and colorectal cancer. New data, presented at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting, suggest calcium intake of more than 1,000 milligrams per day may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer in people who have alterations in one or two genes that govern how the kidneys absorb calcium. Vanderbilt University researchers found that calcium did not affect colorectal cancer risk in people who did not carry the mutation in one or both the genes.
