Buttercup Sanctuary for Goats, the only such sanctuary in the U.K., houses 150 previously abused or neglected goats and has placed 110 others in foster homes. Alan McElligott of Queen Mary, University of London, studied the goats' response to a maze with a food reward to assess how well they had recovered from their troubled pasts. "We can show that the goats that have been rescued and actually treated well for several years actually fully recover from their former neglect," McElligott said, a finding he says is important for rescues around the world.
