Half of all drug spending will go toward specialty drugs by 2018, compared with 20% in 2009, according to research from pharmacy benefit manager Prime Therapeutics and insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. Price hikes and more specialty drugs in drugmakers' pipelines will drive the increase, according to the research. "As pharmacy benefit managers and health plans strive to work to improve the quality of care for individuals with specialty drug needs, the expected increases in cost of care can be lessened through specialty pharmacy management programs," said Patrick Gleason, Prime's director of health outcomes.
