Some small and midsize firms in New York are engaging in succession planning to ease the transition as older partners prepare to retire. "In the 1970s and 1980s, there was an explosion of smaller prominent boutique law firms, and many of those lawyers" are getting ready to step down, according to Mark Zauderer, a partner at Flemming Zulack Williamson Zauderer. Succession planning can be especially challenging at small firms, where senior lawyers often were involved in launching their firms, he says.
