More than half of the adults living in Kentucky have no dental insurance, and 49% of them avoided dental care last year because of the cost, according to a survey by the University of Cincinnati Institute for Policy Research. Many patients in the Louisville area are treated on an emergency basis because of unmet dental needs, says Stephanie Poynter, dental director for Family Health Centers. The Angels Community Clinic in Murray has a 60-person waiting list for dental care and lacks the funds to add more, clinical director Debbie Warner says.
