Prophylactic treatment with the drug isoniazid of patients with HIV and at high risk for tuberculosis increases the incidence of drug-resistant TB strains, according to a study published in Science Translational Medicine. The study is based on mathematical modeling, not real-world observation, says Karin Weyer, a coordinator with the World Health Organization's Stop TB program. Nonetheless, policymakers designing prevention strategies should take the study into consideration, says Ramanan Laxminarayan, who directs the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy.
