Local governments in Texas violate the state constitution when they offer domestic partner benefits to employees in same-sex relationships, according to an opinion issued this week by state Attorney General Greg Abbott, who cited the state constitution's ban on same-sex marriages and similar arrangements. "I am not surprised that once again he is more interested in dividing Texans for political gain than bringing them together to make Texas stronger and more prosperous," said openly gay Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns, responding to Abbott's nonbinding opinion.
