When accepting a tenure-track academic job offer, it is important to be clear about your needs such as startup money or other perks, David D. Perlmutter, director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Iowa, writes in this column. Perlmutter advises prospective hires to keep negotiations private, clearly explain the need for extras and be ready to compromise. "If you really want to get to yes, you may have to accept that there are certain things -- such as an exact salary figure or a set amount of research support -- that may not be negotiable at all," Perlmutter writes.
