A mobile phone application that can diagnose malaria without drawing blood is the winner of the Microsoft Uganda Imagine Cup. The app, developed by a four-student team from Makerere University, also gives the user the location of the closest malaria treatment center.
United Nations official Rashida Manjoo will visit India for 10 days to examine violence against women in the country, with the UN Human Rights Council then hearing her findings. "My hope is that my dialogues with government and civil society representatives will contribute in some small way to the current discussions and efforts in the fight against violence in the country," she said.
India is seeking meteorological experts to help develop a more accurate monsoon forecasting system by 2017. "Precision in the monsoon forecast can raise farm production by 10% to 15% in rain-fed areas," says Ravinder Singh of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute.
Lakhdar Brahimi, the United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria, is expected to continue in his joint role, says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "[I]t is very important that the United Nations works together with the League of Arab States," says Ban. Brahimi will brief the Security Council about Syria on Friday.
