The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's budget proposal calls for new industry user fees to fund food safety programs, Julian Hattern writes. These fees would fund about 94% of an almost $500 million proposed budget increase. But the cost "is modest compared to the economic value it can deliver: reduced costs to industry, government, and the health care system due to less foodborne illness," the agency said.
