Veterans with PTSD continue to receive prescriptions for tranquilizers and sedatives including Xanax, Valium and other benzodiazepines from Department of Veterans Affairs doctors despite VA guidelines against their use, according to officials with the VA's National Center for PTSD. The VA system has seen a threefold increase in the number of veterans with PTSD over the last decade, and while benzodiazepine prescriptions for these patients dropped from 37% to 30% between 1999 and 2009, they have remained stable since then.
