Despite the fact that Canada ranks among the top countries in education, there is a perception that the country's education system is lagging behind its counterparts in China and elsewhere in Asia, writes Sachin Maharaj, an assistant curriculum leader in the Toronto District School Board, in this commentary. Maharaj questions whether Canadian schools should hold up schools in China as a model of excellence, noting that the country's intense focus on academics also has negative effects on students' mental health.
