Oakland, Calif., schools should seek a new leader who will continue the work of outgoing Superintendent Tony Smith, Katherine Schultz writes in this blog post. Schultz, dean of the Mills College's School of Education, describes the characteristics of an effective urban superintendent, noting that he or she should be able to communicate the vision to a wide audience, have experience in urban classrooms and not be quick to change a district's program. "How we select and support our next leaders will make the difference," she writes.
