Search committees must judge fairly between internal and external candidates when hiring, writes David Evans, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Buena Vista University in Iowa. In this blog post, Evans is critical of blanket policies preventing some internal candidates from advancing into open jobs. "It is possible that an internal candidate will legitimately emerge as the best choice in a search, so an arbitrary rule preventing his or her appointment is distinctly counterproductive," Evans writes.
