The AAFP signed a letter to more than 3,100 hospitals that urges them to reduce their rates of nonmedically indicated early deliveries before 39 weeks' gestation to less than 5%. AAFP executive vice president Douglas Henley, M.D., said the letter supports the HHS Strong Start Initiative and reflects Academy recommendations to the Choosing Wisely campaign. "We felt we needed to direct that message to hospitals so that they can develop institutional policies that reflect what Choosing Wisely is already saying to the public and to doctors," he said.
