Freight carload volume of U.S. railroads dropped 3.3% in the week ending May 25 year-on-year, but intermodal activity rose 1.4%, according to the Association of American Railroads. Half of the 10 carload categories registered gains, led by a 28.7% increase in petroleum and petroleum products. Crude-by-rail shipments of Class I railroads posted a record growth of 166% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, AAR noted.
