The Affordable Care Act mandate that lets young adults stay on the health plans of their parents until age 26 helped shield young adults against high hospital emergency costs in 2011, according to research by HHS, IMS Health and RAND. The study looked into serious conditions such as bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries and other medical emergencies and found that a total of $147 million in hospital bills were covered by insurance companies for that year under that provision.
