Preteens and teens who received their initial four shots of the acellular version of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine were six times more likely to get whooping cough than those who had the whole-cell vaccine, a study in Pediatrics showed. Researchers reported that every additional dose of acellular vaccine rather than whole-cell vaccine raised the odds of developing whooping cough by about 40%.
