Scientists have renovated two Cold War bunkers at a former Air Force base in Maine to serve as artificial hibernacula for bats in an effort to protect the animals from white-nose syndrome, a killer fungal disease that has spread across 22 states and five Canadian provinces, killing some 6.7 million bats. Unlike caves, the bunkers can be disinfected after the bats leave. The move reflects a shift in efforts to fight the disease, said endangered species biologist Ann Froschauer: "Our best bet now is to work towards how we can contain the disease."
