More research is needed to determine how the use of EHRs is affecting coding, which many believe is resulting in providers receiving higher levels of reimbursement, American Health Information Management Association official Sue Bowman told officials from CMS and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT during a listening session Friday. To address the issues tied to EHRs, Bowman urged CMS to devise national coding standards for hospital reporting of clinic and emergency department visits, among other recommendations.
