Lean manufacturing processes and something called the "digital factory" are helping Airbus step up production of various models to meet demand. The digital factory integrates design and manufacturing in the industrialization phase, which trims costs all the way from concept to implementation by testing concepts on computers before execution. "We used [simulation] a lot in the A350, which was a dramatic change from 10 years ago when we were developing the A380," said Jens Gralfs, Airbus operations vice president of overall physical design.
