A small study published online in JAMA Psychiatry found that sodium nitroprusside, a drug for severe hypertension, is effective in improving symptoms of patients with schizophrenia. Patients who received a single infusion of sodium nitroprusside saw their symptoms diminished within four hours, and their improvements lasted up to four weeks without apparent side effects. The findings should be considered preliminary due to the 20-patient sample, researchers said.
